Milly Dowler's parents issue a statement ahead of Monday's Leveson vote

16/03/2013

Bob and Sally Dowler, the parents of Milly Dowler, the murdered schoolgirl whose mobile phone was hacked by journalists, have issued a statement expressing concern at the prospect that politicians might not implement the Leveson recommendations. In a statement issued through their solicitor, Mark Lewis, they said:

Given the considerable investment of time and money in the Leveson Inquiry, we are very disappointed to learn that Lord Justice Leveson’s proposals may not now be taken forward if the politicians choose to ignore the recommendations of LJ Leveson that were aimed at preventing the sort of abuses that we and so many others suffered.

Mr Lewis, who represents a number of victims of press intrusion, said:

Politicians should not peddle the lie that implementing Leveson would restrict press freedom. We do not have press freedom - certain parts of the press have abused their privilege without taking responsibility. This is the opportunity to bring back integrity to the journalistic profession and challenge the cowardice of politicians who are too scared to stand up to the vested interests of huge media groups. Failure to implement Leveson is not only failing the Prime Minister's 'Dowler test', but failing the electorate as a whole.

The Dowler test is a reference to the Prime Minister's promise in his Leveson Inquiry evidence:

The test of the system is: is it going to provide proper protection to ordinary families who, through no fault of their own, get caught up in these media maelstroms and get completely mistreated? And the evidence of the Dowler family and the evidence of the McCann family is incredibly powerful in that regard.I will never forget meeting with the Dowler family in Downing Street to run through the terms of this Inquiry with them and to hear what they had been through and how it had redoubled, trebled the pain and agony they'd been through over losing Milly. I'll never forget that, and that's the test of all this. It's not: do the politicians or the press feel happy with what we get? It's: are we really protecting people who have been caught up and absolutely thrown to the wolves by this process. That's what the test is.

Dr Gerry McCann has also responded to the cross-party Leveson talks ending, stating that he and Kate McCann 'gave evidence to the inquiry so that some lasting good might come out of a horrendous experience.'Read more about Cameron's Royal Charter plans here.Ask your MP to vote against Cameron's Royal Charter in Monday's vote here.
