we know of examples in the public domain of stealing information to gain access to personal data. These examples range from rifling through dustbins (the patois for this is ‘binnology’) to more prosaic cases of stealing personal dairies or other forms of hard data. I have already touched on the far less controversial example of the DT MPs’ expenses story.
We believe the press should be held to standards which protect the public, strengthen democracy and safeguard freedom of expression.
