Petition: 'Ensure all the press is regulated by a Press Recognition Panel approved body'

10/3/2025

Christopher Whitmey, Hacked Off supporter and press standards campaigner

Hacked Off’s newly-released documentary, Britain’s Press: Power Without Responsibility? underlines, yet again, that the main British press has no independent regulator that can investigate complaints about what it has published. Only the very rich can afford to seek a remedy through the courts. The previous Government claimed that Leveson’s incentive for newspapers to join an independent regulator would have ruined them financially. As the News Item of 28th November 2024 on Hacked Off’s website sets out, the Government had no such evidence.

Hacked Off and the Press Justice Project helped in drafting my Government petition: ‘Ensure all the press is regulated by a Press Recognition Panel approved body. We think this would provide justice for victims of lies or intrusion by newspapers, and deliver a trustworthy and accountable press that the British people deserve. The press could help create new approved bodies if needed.’
