Tell Your MP: Demand Real Press Accountability Now

For too long, the UK press has operated under a flawed system of self-regulation, leaving the public vulnerable to press misconduct, invasion of privacy, and misinformation. The Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), which claims to hold newspapers to account, has consistently failed in its role as a regulator.

A new report from Hacked Off, The Watchdog That Won’t Bite, reveals the stark reality of IPSO’s ineffectiveness:

  • Out of thousands of complaints, only 0.7% were upheld.
  • The average wait time for complaint adjudication is 161 days.
  • IPSO has issued zero fines and conducted zero standards investigations in its ten-year history.

These failures undermine trust in the press and harm victims of press abuse. High-profile cases, such as the misreporting of climate change data by the Daily Mail and the harmful coverage of suicides by several outlets, demonstrate IPSO’s tendency to side with powerful publishers over the public.

It’s time for change. The press must adopt a truly independent regulator like IMPRESS, or the government must act to protect victims and deliver on the unfinished recommendations of the Leveson Inquiry.

Through this campaign, you can send a powerful message to your MP. Call on them to support stronger press regulation, complete Leveson Part Two, and ensure the press is held accountable for its actions. Together, we can create a media landscape that values truth, fairness, and public trust.
