Gemma Dowler's demand for 'Leveson Now' to reach 35m people in Britain's biggest 'Thunderclap'

More than 35 million people on social media networks including Twitter and Facebook will be reached through a major social media campaign fronted by Gemma Dowler to put an end to press abuse.At 20:00 BST on 27 June 2014, victims of press abuse will join forces with leading figures on Twitter and thousand of members of the public to simultaneously tweet – flash-mob style – a powerful message demanding the implementation of the Leveson Inquiry’s recommendations on press self-regulation.The ‘Leveson Now’ campaign – co-ordinated by campaign group Hacked Off in the wake of the phone hacking trial – is Britain’s biggest ever Thunderclap, with 2,500 people on Twitter and facebook messaging their combined audience of more than 35 million followers and friends.Supporting Gemma Dowler, the sister of Milly, the Thunderclap will reach the 35 million followers of some of Britain’s most popular Twitter users, including Russell Brand, Stephen Fry, Simon Pegg, JK Rowling, John Cleese, John Bishop, Ian McKellen, Richard Dawkins, Graham Norton, Paloma Faith, Marcus Brigstocke, Billy Bragg, Irvine Welsh, Peter Tatchell, Guy Chambers and many, many others.The Thunderclap follows the short video made by Gemma Dowler in response to the phone hacking trial verdicts. Gemma made a heartfelt plea to David Cameron to keep the promise he made to her family – to bring about real and permanent change to ensure that no other family has to suffer the press abuse that her family endured.Dr Evan Harris, Associate Director of Hacked Off, confirmed:

That is why we support it and that is why we urge newspaper publishers to embrace it.”
