Commenting on the summary judgment issued today in the Duchess of Sussex's privacy and copyright claims against Mail publisher Associated Newspapers, Hacked Off Policy Director Nathan Sparkes said,

No-one should have to see private letters to members of their own family splashed across the frontpages of a newspaper, yet without a shred of public interest justification, this is what the Mail on Sunday did to the Duchess of Sussex.Not only was the Mail’s conduct immoral, but the Judge has today confirmed that it was also illegal.For decades some of the largest newspapers in this country have considered themselves above the law; able to intrude upon and libel people with impunity, while their victims must suffer without remedy. The Duchess’ legal challenge and subsequent victory shows that it does not have to be that way.But for every victim of press illegality who is sufficiently resourced to obtain justice through the courts, there are dozens more unable to do so. Only the Leveson system of independent press regulation, including fair, cheap and compulsory arbitration to speedily resolve legal claims, will deliver justice for all victims of press illegality.
