A celebration of what has been achieved to date on Hillsborough Law — new legislation to finally put an end to state cover-ups. And calls for the government to keep its promises on press regulation to end lies, abuse and corruption in the media.

Finish the job on press reform

The Hillsborough Law is a landmark step against state cover-ups. But the cover-up that followed Hillsborough was not only an official one. The false stories printed about Liverpool supporters in the aftermath of the disaster caused decades of additional harm, and the press has never been held properly to account for them.

The Leveson Inquiry set out how to prevent that happening again: independent, effective press regulation, with genuine redress for members of the public who are wronged. More than a decade on, Leveson Part Two has been cancelled, the incentives designed to make independent regulation work have been repealed, and most national newspapers still sit outside independent regulation. This rally calls on the government to keep its promises and finish the job to hold newspapers to account.
