Speaking to the Liaison Committee at the House of Commons this afternoon (at approximately 14:35), in response to a question from Andy Slaughter MP, the Prime Minister has confirmed that he will meet with the victims of press abuse.
This news follows a letter sent by over 30 victims of the press last week, which sought a meeting with the PM.
Gerry McCann, signatory on the letter and father of the missing girl Madeleine McCann, said,
"I'm pleased that the Prime Minister has recognised the appalling abuses that so many of us have been through at the hands of the press, and agreed to meet with us. It's critical that he takes the action that has been promised on media standards, and I look forward to discussing how he intends to do so at the meeting."
Hacked Off’s Chief Executive Nathan Sparkes said,
“Hacked Off welcome this confirmation that the Prime Minister will meet with the victims of press abuse to discuss solutions to low standards and wrongdoing in the media.
“Ordinary people affected by press abuse have had to wait over a decade for a Prime Minister with the courage to take action on press standards. It is critical that this meeting takes place as soon as possible, so that appropriate legislation can be brought forward and the public can be protected from intrusion, harassment and other abuses in the future.”
