Former Cambridge Professor Jason Arday has died after an extensive series of hostile and intrusive attacks in national newspapers.

A Hacked Off spokesperson said:

“Professor Jason Arday was relentlessly hounded by the press over the last three weeks in a campaign of harassment which went far beyond any limited public interest considerations around academic standards.

“This level of relentless intrusion targeting a single individual, including their background and their family, was conducted without any regard for his welfare and that of his family.

“This tragedy demonstrates yet again the urgent need for effective and independent accountability of the press. We call on the Government to bring proposals to Parliament that will complete a framework of genuine press accountability, in order to protect ordinary members of the public from the kinds of press abuse we have witnessed over the last few weeks.”
