24/04/2012

Hacked Off campaign statement on correspondence between Jeremy Hunt's office and James Murdoch published by the Leveson Inquiry today:"In light of the revelations at the Leveson Inquiry today about the nature of the correspondence between Culture, Media and Sport secretary Jeremy Hunt and News Corp, Hacked Off believes Mr Hunt's position within government is untenable."The extent of the collusion between Jeremy Hunt and News Corp became clear with revelations that his office has leaked details of advice Mr Hunt received from regulator Ofcom to News Corp, and regularly leaked information relating to the BSkyB takeover bid, including Mr Hunt's statements to Parliament. It has also been revealed that information on arrangements for the setting up of the Leveson Inquiry were passed on to News Corp before being made public."Given this close and improper relationship, we believe it will be inappropriate for Mr Hunt to be the minister in charge of implementing the changes to how the press operates in this country which will be recommended by Lord Justice Leveson at the end of Part 1 of his inquiry."
