Today's judgment completes Meghan Markle's victory against the Mail on Sunday, after the newspaper unlawfully published a private and deeply personal letter between Meghan and her father.For decades some of the largest newspapers in this country have considered themselves above the law; able to intrude upon and libel people with impunity, while their victims must suffer without remedy. The Duchess’ legal challenge and subsequent victory shows that it does not have to be that way.But for every victim of press illegality who is sufficiently resourced to obtain justice through the courts, there are dozens more unable to do so. Only the Leveson system of independent press regulation, including fair, cheap and compulsory arbitration to speedily resolve legal claims, will deliver justice for all victims of press illegality.
