Commenting on the Report Dr Evan Harris, Joint Executive Director of Hacked Off, said,Today’s report published by the Privileges Committee is just the latest evidence that the full truth has yet to come out about the industrial scale illegality at the News of the World (and potentially The Sun) under the editorships of Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, and the conspiracy to cover up this wrongdoing by News International Executives. No doubt this will be debated further in parliament but only the second part of the Leveson Inquiry, whose terms of reference have already been set, can uncover the full truth and true extent of the criminality and hold those who are responsible to account.Part One of the Leveson Inquiry was not able to explore the corporate wrongdoing and the cover-up because of pending criminal investigations, and it is not acceptable that relatively junior reporters should be convicted while the truth of the corporate cover-up remains hidden. If the evidence of press and police collusion over Hillsborough and Orgreave which has emerged over the last six months was not enough, this finding of cover-up at the top of News International goes even further in pressing the case for the Government to re-commit to Leveson Two as they have always promised to the victims of press abuse. In addition, of course, Part Two of the Leveson Inquiry will need to investigate the cover up at the Mirror Group newspapers, whose senior executives have been judged in civil litigation to have misled the first part of the Leveson Inquiry.NotesHacked Off is the campaign for a free and accountable press. The Campaign works with victims of press abuse to achieve those aims. The Report can be viewed here. The Sun is also facing civil litigation for allegations of phone hacking, which date back to Rebekah Brooks’ tenure as editor.PRESS ENQUIRIES AND INTERVIEWS: press@hackinginquiry.org or call Nathan Sparkes on 07554 665 940
