The Society of Editors has today partially retracted their statement of Monday March 8th, which dismissed concerns of racism in the press.
Responding, Hacked Off Policy Director Nathan Sparkes said:
This statement does little to repair the damage caused by the Society's statement on Monday, which dismissed concerns of racism in the press.
Instead of engaging with Harry and Meghan's concerns of prejudiced reporting in parts of the press, the Society's response has instead focused exclusively on diversity and inclusion.
While there is no doubt that the industry has a problem with newsroom diversity and inclusion which should be addressed, it must also examine the very real evidence of racist reporting.
