The usual suspects in the press have said they reject the Leveson system and have established another sham regulator “IPSO”. This is just like the PCC, and it does not deliver half the things Leveson said were essential for a fair regulator to help victims of press abuse. It is not independent and it is not effective.IPSO has been designed by the same men who brought us hacking and blagging, the monstering of Christopher Jefferies, the harassment of the McCanns, the Hillsborough libel and many other abuses. They have decided that – if they get their way – nothing will change.Lord Justice Leveson anticipated this stubborn rejection from an unreformed and unrepentant press. So the Royal Charter says that if the press have not accepted reform a year from now, then Parliament will be asked to take action. Leveson was clear that in this event, Parliament must legislate to ensure effective independent regulation – no more drinks at the “Last Chance Saloon” of failed press self-regulation. We are now reminding the politicians – who will be asking for our votes soon – of their duty to follow through on promises they made to victims of press abuse that Leveson would be implemented. So join John Cleese and other leading supporters of our cause at a Parliamentary rally on the 25th February. It is from 12 until 3pm in Committee Room, 11. It is just along the corridor from the Ministry of Silly Walks, as our host will NOT be demonstrating. We have invited all the parties to tell us what they are going to do. If you can come, then you can also invite your MP to meet you at the rally by clicking here. We will send you a briefing of what to ask him or her after you register. If you don’t want to ask your MP for a meeting but still want to come on the day, then please register here instead. This is a great opportunity for you to hear the parties’ spokespeople on how they intend to keep their promises to deliver Leveson, to put them on the spot and to meet more of our well-known supporters, and – if you wish – to lobby your own MP on a one-to-one basis.
